Dream a Highway
Posted by shaun |Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are two of our heroes. Their music has been such an inspiration for us in terms of songwriting, vocal harmonies, and instrumental textures. One day about two years ago, we decided to set up some mics in my living room on a rainy day. We left the windows open so you can hear the rain in the recordings!
We had recorded several songs when our “engineer”, Sam Hoyt, pulled out a Kalimba (aka - African thumb piano) he’s had since he was a kid. We quickly found it was tuned mostly in the key of E, and we scratched our heads trying to think what we knew in that key. The result was this version of Gillian Welch’s Dream a Highway. This past weekend, I helped Sam tune the Kalimba to be more flexible, basically giving him more options for improvising in several keys.

I’ve always been so impressed that you were about to tackle this song and do it so beautifully. It’s sacred.
