The Fight for Abortion Rights and the Democratic Party

In 1973, the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision affirmed a woman’s
right to abortion. The fight for abortion rights was won as a result
of the women’s movement and other radical grassroots agitation and
organization.

Thirty-four years later, women’s right to abortion is
under attack, not only by Republicans and the religious right, but
also by Democrats such as Hillary Clinton who consistently support
legislation which chips away at Roe. Clinton has said she wants to
“find common ground” with sexist opponents of women’s right to
abortion by working “to reduce the number of abortions.” Yet the
mainstream liberal leaders of organizations such as NARAL Pro Choice
America and the National Organization for Women (NOW) have
consistently diverted the movement into the arms of the Democratic
Party.

Join the International Socialist Organization (ISO) for a public
meeting on abortion rights and the Democrats, and find out how we can
rebuild a movement capable of fighting for this fundamental right.
